Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung: "We Will Support POSCO's Commitment to Decarbonization"

POSCO Pohang Steel Plant Visit Investment Activation On-site Meeting

Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, visited POSCO Pohang Steelworks on the 17th and held an on-site meeting with POSCO Group to promote investment, stating, “We are determined to support POSCO in maintaining its competitiveness in the global steel market through the decarbonization process.”

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung: "We Will Support POSCO's Commitment to Decarbonization" Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, is listening to an explanation from officials along with Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, on the afternoon of October 17 at the planned landfill site for hydrogen reduction steelmaking at POSCO Pohang Steelworks to promote investment activation with the POSCO Group.


At the on-site meeting held together with Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Park Sung-taek, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and other related ministers and vice ministers, Minister Kang made these remarks.


He emphasized, “The hydrogen reduction steelmaking process is a core technology that can maintain overwhelming competitiveness in the global market by leading decarbonization transition and overcoming carbon trade barriers,” adding, “We will actively support this together with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and other related ministries so that the steelmaking industry can break away from the perception of being a greenhouse gas emitting industry and establish itself as a representative eco-friendly industry.”


Minister Kang stated, “Last September, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries reflected the POSCO hydrogen reduction steelmaking site project in the reclamation master plan at the Central Coastal Management Committee,” and added, “Since the inclusion in the reclamation master plan was completed three months ahead of schedule, laying a good foundation, we expect that our steel industry will soon break away from the perception of being a greenhouse gas emitting industry.”


He continued, “Through the hydrogen reduction steelmaking process, we will actively support POSCO at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries level so that it can lead the decarbonization transition and overcome carbon trade barriers, maintaining overwhelming competitiveness in the global market.”
