Daily Clinical Surveillance at Pig Farms in Northern Gyeonggi... Enhanced Quarantine Measures Upon Suspicion of Infected Pigs

Gyeonggi-do, Hwacheon African Swine Fever Epidemiological Farm Detailed Inspection Results Negative On the 13th, Gyeonggi Province conducted thorough inspections and disinfection at pig farms in northern Gyeonggi, including Pocheon and Gapyeong, following the outbreak of African Swine Fever at a pig farm located in Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province.

Amid the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) at a livestock farm in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, Gyeonggi Province has taken preemptive measures to prevent the spread of the infectious disease, resulting in all epidemiologically related livestock farms testing negative.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 17th, ASF occurred on the 13th at a pig farm located in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon Province, prompting comprehensive inspections and disinfection of epidemiological farms in northern Gyeonggi, including nearby Pocheon and Gapyeong.

To prevent disease transmission between farms, five teams of livestock quarantine officers, totaling eight personnel, conducted clinical and detailed tests on six epidemiological farms (two in Dongducheon-si, one in Gapyeong-gun, and three in Pocheon-si) and one vehicle entering the affected farm, all of which tested negative. Additionally, clinical surveillance of 109 epidemiological farms linked to slaughterhouses receiving pigs from the affected farm also returned negative results, confirming no transmission.

The province will continue surveillance activities on pig farms in northern Gyeonggi and plans to conduct ASF environmental testing on 20 pig farms in the border areas of Paju and Yeoncheon until the end of November.

Jung Bong-su, director of the Northern Gyeonggi Animal Hygiene Testing Laboratory, urged, “Since autumn is a period of active feeding for wild boars, pig farms should adhere to the eight major biosecurity facility management guidelines, differentiate between inside and outside the farm by changing shoes and disinfecting, and prohibit entry into the mountains. If any suspicious symptoms appear on the farm, please report immediately to the quarantine authorities.”

Meanwhile, since ASF first occurred in farmed pigs in 2019, as of September, 47 cases have been reported across 18 cities and counties in Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gangwon, and Gyeongbuk regions. In wild boars, 4,166 cases have been reported nationwide across 43 cities and counties.
