Foreign Visitor Spending in Japan from January to September Surpasses Last Year's Total
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of Korean visitors to Japan last month increased by 15.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 656,000, ranking first. The total number of foreign visitors to Japan last month was 2,872,000, marking a record high for a single month.
JNTO stated, "In the case of Korea, the number of regional flight routes, including charter flights to various parts of Japan, has increased, and the Chuseok holiday also had an impact, resulting in a record high as of September." China ranked second with 652,000 visitors.
In the cumulative number of visitors from January to September, Korea led with 6,468,000 visitors, followed by China (5,247,000) and Taiwan (4,585,000).
The cumulative number of foreign visitors to Japan from January to last month this year was 26.88 million, which is 1.81 million more than the same period last year.
Spending by visitors to Japan this year has already surpassed last year’s total expenditure. JNTO reported that visitor spending from January to September was 5.8582 trillion yen (approximately 53.5 trillion KRW). Last year’s total spending was 5.3065 trillion yen (approximately 48.5 trillion KRW).
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun explained, "With around 3 million foreign visitors coming each month, the related consumption growth trend continues."
