Initiation of Development for Carbon Neutral Innovative Catalysts and Reactor Technologies
Professor Kim Seon-gyu of the Department of Industrial Chemistry at Pukyong National University has been selected for the Samsung Future Technology Development Project for the second half of 2024.
Professor Kim was recognized for the creativity and innovation of his research on "Development of an Electrochemical Dual Catalyst System for Efficient Carbon Dioxide Conversion," and will begin conducting the research starting this December.
The Samsung Future Technology Development Project is a public research support initiative launched by Samsung Electronics in 2013, with a fund of 1.5 trillion KRW, aimed at advancing basic science in South Korea, innovating industrial technology, and nurturing world-class scientists and engineers.
Every year, in both the first and second halves, the project selects and supports creative and innovative research in the fields of basic science, materials, and ICT (Information and Communication Technology). For the second half of this year, 38 teams nationwide, including Professor Kim, were selected.
Professor Kim has been dedicated to developing core technologies for chemical reaction catalysts and reaction processes to achieve carbon neutrality. In this research, he plans to overcome the limitations of existing carbon dioxide conversion processes by utilizing electrochemical techniques and dual catalysts to develop a cyclic process that produces high value-added compounds.
Professor Kim stated, "With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and transitioning chemical processes to 100% renewable energy, I will focus my research on developing carbon compound conversion technologies for the production of high value-added compounds."
