HD Hyundai Marine Solutions is taking the lead in establishing an international standard for carbon emission management, the first in the shipbuilding and shipping industry.
On the 16th, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions announced that it recently signed a 'Business Agreement for LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) Calculation' with HD Hyundai Samho and global shipping company CMA-CGM. The signing ceremony was attended by Shin Hyun-dae, CEO of HD Hyundai Samho, Xavier Leclerq, Vice President and Head of New Building at CMA-CGM, and Kim Jeong-hyeok, Executive Director of the Management Support Division at HD Hyundai Marine Solutions.
LCA is an environmental soundness assessment system that measures carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle of a product, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal. Recently, the importance of managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Scope 3 category has been emphasized, attracting significant attention from the shipbuilding and shipping industries.
However, due to the large amount of materials used and the complex processes involved in shipbuilding, it has been difficult to implement an LCA model specific to the characteristics of the shipbuilding and shipping sectors.
Under this agreement, CMA-CGM and HD Hyundai Samho will provide carbon emission data covering the entire life cycle of ships, from construction to operation and scrapping. HD Hyundai Marine Solutions will establish a carbon emission measurement method applicable to the shipbuilding and shipping sectors based on the collected data.
HD Hyundai Marine Solutions plans to establish this as an international standard for the shipbuilding and shipping industry through third-party verification by organizations such as the Korea Standards Association. Furthermore, by linking this standard with its digital solutions and eco-friendly retrofit projects, the company aims to offer a one-stop solution from carbon emission measurement to reduction strategies.
An official from HD Hyundai Marine Solutions stated, "With the strengthening of carbon emission regulations, the importance of establishing a systematic and objective carbon emission management system in the shipbuilding and shipping industries is gradually increasing. We will lead the decarbonization market by establishing an international standard for carbon emission management."
