Minister Lee Sang-min: "Strive to Pass on the Value of the Buma Uprising
to Future Generations"

The 45th anniversary commemorative ceremony of the Buma Democratic Uprising was held on the 16th under the theme "The Flame of Buma, Beyond the Era."

At the ceremony held at the Busan City Hall auditorium, Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min delivered a commemorative speech, stating, "On the 45th anniversary of the Buma Uprising, we will strive to fully pass on the values of the Buma Democratic Uprising, which lives and breathes in our hearts, to future generations."

45th Anniversary Ceremony of the Buma Democratic Uprising... 'The Flame of Buma, Beyond the Times'

The Buma Democratic Uprising commemorative ceremony is an event to honor the democratization movement that took place mainly in Busan and Masan in October 1979. It was first designated as a government-hosted commemorative day in 2019, and this year marked the sixth government-hosted event.

This ceremony was hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the 'Buma Democratic Uprising Truth Commission' under the Prime Minister's Office, and organized by the Buma Democratic Uprising Memorial Foundation. About 600 people, including those related to the Buma Democratic Uprising, civic groups, and citizens, attended.

The theme "The Flame of Buma, Beyond the Era" was chosen to signify that the 1979 Buma Democratic Uprising was a flame that was carried forward to the May 18 Democratic Movement in 1980 and the June 10 Uprising in 1987, achieving freedom and democracy on this land.

In the pre-ceremony performance, 45 members of the Saha-gu Boys and Girls Choir in Busan sang the national anthem. The main performance connected a video message titled "A Diary of a Female College Student," written by a student attending Busan National University in the year the Buma Democratic Uprising occurred, with the original musical "1979 Fragments of Memory" about the Buma Uprising.

The congratulatory performance featured singer Yoon Sun-ae and the Saha-gu Boys and Girls Choir singing "Sola Sola Pureureun Sola" and "If That Day Comes" together.
