Sujeong Library and Bongmu Elementary School Receive Presidential Citation at Library Competition

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held the National Library Conference at High1 Resort in Jeongseon on the 16th and awarded government honors to libraries and schools that contributed to the development of library operations and services.

Sujeong Library conducted various services reflecting the characteristics of the old downtown area, a region densely populated by knowledge and information vulnerable groups. It provided diverse services tailored to local characteristics, such as programs to revitalize reading clubs for the elderly, disabled, and multicultural groups. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism evaluated that “it expanded support programs for marginalized groups, reduced educational gaps among local residents, and contributed to the cultural development of libraries in the Seongnam area.”

Bongmu Elementary School received high marks for its ‘Che(In)Ji (Tightening People and Knowledge) Project,’ which established a cooperative system among classes, families, and the local community, connecting people with people and people with knowledge. The Ministry explained, “It worked hard to nurture future talents through various library events such as developing reading programs linked to the curriculum, library use education and utilization classes, and ‘Creative Reading Art.’”

The Prime Minister’s Citation goes to Seoul Library in Seoul, Yulmok Library in Incheon, Changwon Central Library in Gyeongnam, Mokpo Library in Jeonnam, Cheongsol Middle School in Gyeonggi, and the Joint Military University Library, among others.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selects excellent libraries every year and awards government honors. Candidates are recommended by seventeen metropolitan and provincial governments, metropolitan and provincial offices of education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Korea Association of Specialized Libraries, and are selected through expert review committees and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Ministry of Education official review committees.

Yong Hoseong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “We will spare no support to create conditions where libraries in each region develop in a balanced way and all citizens can enjoy knowledge culture.”
