Gokseong Hyanggyo and Others Announced for Promotion as Jeonnam Provincial Designated Cultural Heritage

Including June Wave General Jeongryeolgak, Yongsanjae, and Deokyangsa

Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that Gokseong Hyanggyo, Yuwolpajanggun Jeongnyeolgak, Yongsanjae, and Deokyangsa have each been promoted to Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage and Monument status, with name changes announced for designation.

Gokseong Hyanggyo and Yuwolpajanggun Jeongnyeolgak were designated as cultural heritage materials by Jeollanam-do in 1984, while Yongsanjae and Deokyangsa have been managed as Jeollanam-do monuments since 1981.

However, due to ongoing opinions that the cultural heritage status is low compared to their historical and academic value, and the need for protection and management of the Sin Sung-gyeom historic site located in the region, Gokseong-gun has been promoting the upgrade of cultural heritage status and expansion of protection zones.

As a result, ‘Gokseong Hyanggyo’ has been promoted to Tangible Cultural Heritage, ‘Yuwolpajanggun Jeongnyeolgak’ has been promoted to Monument status, and its name has been changed to ‘Gokseong Yupengno Jeongnyeolgak’.

Additionally, ‘Yongsanjae and Deokyangsa’ have been renamed ‘Gokseong Sin Sung-gyeom Historic Site’ by adding the Yeongjeok Bigak and Gyema Stone related to Sin Sung-gyeom in Jukgok-myeon, and the designated area has been changed.

The designated cultural heritage will be finalized after a 30-day public notice period and review by the Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Committee.
