Government to Hold 29th Public Discussion on the 15th in Jeju
Promotion of Additional Designation of Chuja Island through Enforcement Decree
Establishment of Development Plan Next Year... Support Until 2030
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has newly designated Chujado as an 'Outer National Remote Island' and is promoting systematic support to alleviate residents' inconveniences.
On the 15th, the government announced this at the '29th Public Discussion on Livelihood with the People - A Clean Island Open to the World, Global Resort City Jeju' held at the Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC).
About 80 people, including Jeju entrepreneurs, parents, and local residents, attended the discussion. The event was also joined by Woo Dong-gi, Chairman of the Local Era Committee; Cho Kyu-hong, Minister of Health and Welfare; Lee Jung-hyun, Vice Chairman of the Local Era Committee; and Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Province.
President Yoon Suk-yeol promised to practically improve the residential and living conditions in Jeju Province. In particular, Chujado will be included as a 'Remote Island' under the 'Special Act on Support for Outer National Remote Islands,' scheduled to be enforced in January next year, to improve the living environment of Chujado residents.
Earlier, the government enacted the 'Special Act on Support for Outer National Remote Islands' in January to create a safe residential environment and increase income for islands that serve as the 'border guard' at the outermost edges of the country. In addition to the 34 remote islands designated by the law, the government is preparing to enact enforcement ordinances to additionally designate nine remote islands, including Chujado, considering accessibility such as route distance. Once designated as an Outer National Remote Island, residents can receive priority support for safety facilities, and various supports to prevent illegal fishing and expand the resident population will become possible.
To establish a comprehensive development plan to support remote islands, a research project is underway until December this year. Based on the research results, a comprehensive development plan will be established next year, and projects will officially begin from 2026 to 2030. The comprehensive development plan is expected to include various projects to expand living infrastructure to alleviate residents' inconveniences, increase income, and improve welfare, thereby enhancing quality of life.
An official from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated, "By improving the residential conditions of the outer national remote islands, we expect to enhance residents' quality of life and strengthen practical territorial sovereignty, contributing to the protection of the Republic of Korea's territory."
