This competition is held to help employees improve their skills early in preparation for the ‘Steel Challenge’ hosted by the World Steel Association.
The ‘Steel Challenge’ is a simulation game where steel engineers from around the world compete in knowledge and skills related to steel manufacturing processes. It started in 2005 and is held annually.
Participants must produce steel within the given conditions and time at the lowest cost in the simulation game, and the participant who produces at the lowest cost within the time limit wins.
The competition is conducted by first selecting regional winners from East Asia/Oceania, China, West Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas, and then determining the final winner through the World Championship.
POSCO actively encourages its employees to participate in the Steel Challenge, and POSCO employees have consistently achieved excellent results in the competition.
In the 10 competitions in which POSCO employees have participated so far, they have won 8 regional championships and 3 world championships, demonstrating outstanding skills in the fields of blast furnace, electric furnace, and secondary refining.
Yeonho, Manager of the Production Technology Strategy Office and the 2017 regional competition winner who is in charge of this in-house competition, said, “Participating in the in-house competition before the world championship was very helpful in preparing for the competition,” and added, “I believe POSCO employees will achieve good results in this world championship based on their diverse technical know-how.”
Meanwhile, the Steel Challenge regional competition will be held on November 26, and the offline finals are scheduled for April next year.
