During Sleep, Home Cam Captures Mom's Voice Saying "Wake Up"
The story of parents of a newly enrolled college student in their 20s installing a home camera in their child's rented room to monitor them has sparked controversy.
On the 12th, JTBC's 'Case Manager' shared the story of A, a newly enrolled college student living alone. A had been living in a school dormitory but recently rented a room secretly without their parents knowing. Feeling uneasy about deceiving their parents, A confessed the truth after a month. Deeply disappointed by this, the parents set a condition to install a home camera in the rented room, which only the mother would occasionally check. Feeling very sorry, A agreed and the home camera was installed.
However, A felt uncomfortable every time they entered the room, feeling monitored. On some days, the mother remotely adjusted the camera angle, and once, while A was sleeping, a voice saying "Wake up" came from the home camera, startling A. When A called and asked, "What are you doing?" the mother retorted, "Aren't you being lazy? Is this why you wanted to live alone?"
Attorney Park Ji-hoon, who heard this story, said, "She is a very strange mother. It feels like she is crossing the line into criminal behavior," adding, "Under the Personal Information Protection Act, installing CCTV is possible if consent is obtained, and consent was given in this case. But regardless of legal matters, A is an adult. There is such a thing as privacy. Unless there is a special reason, this seems like interference or harassment."
Professor Oh Yoon-sung also commented, "This could be a very significant case in the parent-child relationship," and added, "While the concern for the daughter is understandable, excessive love for a child can be worse than insufficient love. There is a risk that the daughter might shut the door to her heart."
Netizens responded with comments such as, "I understand the worry, but monitoring with a home camera is too much," "No matter how much they are parents, they do not have the right to monitor every aspect of their child's privacy," "They might only realize this if they put themselves in the other's shoes," "This is not guiding the child on the right path but ruining them," "It seems like the time to firmly leave the parents' nest," and "This must be very stressful."
