Cheonan City in Chungnam Province announced on the 11th that it has selected traditional businesses that have continued a long-standing tradition with craftsmanship and master artisans who preserve and carry on traditional culture.

The city recently held the ‘Cheonan City Skilled Technology Promotion Committee’ and selected Seo Yongpil, the owner of the bakery ‘Dupang Gwajajeom’, Jeong-suk Park, the owner and traditional rice cake expert of ‘Mindulle Tteok’, and Soo-yeon Lee, a Korean traditional music artist, as traditional businesses and master artisans, respectively.

Dupang Gwajajeom, selected as a traditional business, has been a local staple for 27 years. In 2018, it won the Encouragement Award at the Cheonan City Souvenir Contest with its ‘Kkomaho Walnut’ and has been designated as a Cheonan City Bread Shop and a Ministry of SMEs and Startups Centennial Store, among others.

Jeong-suk Park, selected as a master artisan in the traditional rice cake field, has been leading ‘Mindulle Tteok’ since 2005 and is dedicated to developing and popularizing traditional rice cake products.

Soo-yeon Lee, selected as a master artisan in the field of Korean traditional music, is a disciple of Mook Gye-wol, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 57 (Gyeonggi Folk Song). She has won various competitions, nurtured students, and donated her talents through facility visits, all in efforts to preserve and develop traditional cultural heritage.

Cheonan City plans to present plaques to the selected traditional businesses and master artisans at the monthly meeting on the 1st of next month and provide subsidies for facility renovations and equipment purchases.
