Governor Kim Taeheum Requests Pope's Visit for 2027 Catholic World Youth Day
Chungnam Province is working to make Haemi International Holy Site in Seosan a destination for visitors from around the world.
According to the province on the 10th, ahead of the 2027 World Youth Day, 125 billion KRW is being invested in the Haemi International Holy Site and the Catholic pilgrimage route area to promote the site as a world-renowned attraction.
So far, four projects have been completed: the Haemi International Holy Site Digital History Experience Center, the Haemi History Trail Night Pilgrimage Landscape, the final section of the Haemi International Holy Site Pilgrimage Route, and the Haemi International Holy Site to Ganwolam Premium Tree-lined Road.
The Pilgrimage Visitor Center, which will be built next year, will include a Papal Visit Records Exhibition Hall, a Pilgrimage Culture Experience Center, and a multilingual pilgrimage support office.
A provincial official said, "Since Pope Francis visited in 2014, the international status of Catholic holy sites in the province, such as Haemi International Holy Site and Dangjin Solmoe Holy Site, has greatly increased," and added, "Through this project to make Catholic holy sites into major attractions, we will create places that everyone wants to visit and walk."
Meanwhile, Governor Kim Taeheum, who is currently on a business trip in Europe, met with Cardinal You Heung-sik, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, at the Vatican on the 8th to request that Pope Francis visit the 2027 World Youth Day.
The main World Youth Day event will be held in August 2027, and in Chungnam, a diocesan event will take place for six days prior to the main event.
