Mayor Kim Dong-geun is attending the memorial ceremony for Scholar Shin Suk-ju on the 9th to pay tribute. Kim Dong-geun, mayor of Uijeongbu City, attended a memorial rite honoring Shin Suk-ju on the 9th in celebration of Hangeul Day.
Munchoonggong Shin Suk-ju was a key figure who greatly contributed to the creation of Hunminjeongeum (Hangeul). The Goryeong Shin clan's Munchoonggong branch holds an annual memorial rite on Hangeul Day to commemorate Shin Suk-ju's virtuous deeds.
The memorial rite was held at the tomb of Shin Suk-ju, a cultural heritage site of Uijeongbu City.
At the ceremony, which began with a ritual prayer, Mayor Kim Dong-geun served as the primary officiant offering the first cup (Chohun-gwan), while the secondary (Ahun-gwan) and tertiary (Jonghun-gwan) officiants, offering the second and third cups respectively, were from the clan.
Mayor Kim said, “The history related to Shin Suk-ju and the creation of Hangeul is intertwined with the lives of our Uijeongbu citizens, as seen in places like Munchoong-ro and Hunmin Elementary School,” adding, “We will work together with the Goryeong Shin clan to ensure that Shin Suk-ju is remembered in the future.”
