John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, professors who laid the foundation for "machine learning," a type of artificial intelligence, have been honored with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.
The Nobel Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on the 8th (local time) that the two would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
The committee highly praised their contributions related to "the discovery and invention of the foundation enabling machine learning using artificial neural networks."
Professor Hinton made a breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence by publishing a paper on Deep Learning in 2006. Following the Turing Award in 2018, known as the Nobel Prize of computer science, Professor Hinton confirmed his status as the godfather of artificial intelligence (AI) by receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics.
The laureates will receive a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.34 billion KRW).
