Im Jong-hoon, Chairman of Pocheon City Council, Proposal at the Regular Meeting of the Gyeonggi Northern City and County Chairmen Association
Im Jong-hoon, Chairman of Pocheon City Council, is speaking at the 113th regular meeting of the Northern Gyeonggi Province City and County Chairpersons' Association held at Paju City Council on the 8th. The Pocheon City Council in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that Chairman Lim Jong-hoon proposed a "Resolution to Urge the Expansion of Special Admissions for Rural and Fishing Villages, Including Legal Dong Areas of Urban-Rural Complex Cities" at the 113th regular meeting of the Northern Gyeonggi Province City and County Chairpersons' Council.
The "Resolution to Expand Special Admissions for Rural and Fishing Villages" includes provisions to expand the areas and ratios of special admissions to include dong (洞) areas of urban-rural complex cities, aiming to reduce educational disparities between regions, as well as special exceptions for students in border areas.
Chairman Lim Jong-hoon explained, "Students living in legal dong areas of urban-rural complex cities often face exclusion from special admissions despite living in environments similar to rural areas. For example, a high school located in Sin-eup-dong, Pocheon City, has seen about 250 students annually, totaling approximately 5,000 students over the past 20 years, unable to benefit simply because it is administratively classified as a dong area."
He added, "The northern Gyeonggi region, including Pocheon City, is a military border area exposed to various noise disturbances and dangers due to military training. Therefore, special admissions applying laws related to border areas should be extended to these regions."
At this regular meeting, the agenda was submitted based on Chairman Lim's proposal and was approved with active consent from chairpersons of other cities and counties in northern Gyeonggi.
Meanwhile, the approved resolution will be further discussed by the Gyeonggi Province City and County Chairpersons' Council before being forwarded to the Ministry of Education and the Korea Council for University Education.
