Popular Wedding Photoshoots at Tokyo Station Marunouchi Plaza
6 to 7 Teams Shoot Daily While Waiting
Recent Surge in Chinese Couples Too
The sacred place for wedding photography in Tokyo, Japan, is Marunouchi Square, located east of Tokyo Station. Famous for its beautiful red brick historic building, this spot is bustling day and night with couples and photography companies aiming to shoot weddings. Recently, the number of prospective bride and groom couples who appear to be Chinese has noticeably increased.
According to Japan's Daily Shincho on the 6th, on the 21st of last month alone, three groups were waiting to shoot here in one day. An office worker employed at a company near Marunouchi said, "There are times when there are 6 to 7 groups." The media reported that a noticeable trend recently is the presence of 'Chinese couples.' Since the cameramen also speak Chinese, it seems there are companies specializing in Chinese clients.
The media questioned, "But why is Tokyo Station so popular?" since Tokyo Station itself has no connection to Chinese culture. In particular, Tokyo Station is also a symbol of militarism. Originally, a small-scale station building was planned, but amid the rising victorious atmosphere of the Russo-Japanese War, it was made as splendid as it is now. The media reported that "Chinese couples said they came for wedding photography because it is beautiful and symbolic of Tokyo, regardless of the history."
The photography cost easily exceeds several hundred thousand yen to over one million yen, but most of the shoots are unauthorized. Obtaining road use permits is bothersome, and even if they get one, if the weather is bad, the shooting date must be postponed. The Tokyo Station Hotel, connected to Tokyo Station, is also popular as a wedding venue. However, the wedding cost for about 60 people is around 40 million yen.
