The Uijeongbu Lifelong Learning Center Foundation (Director Yoo Sang-jin) announced on the 4th that it will operate the "2024 Humanities Journey for Citizens, October Philosophy Lecture" at Uijeongbu Culture Station Eum on the 23rd and 30th.
This philosophy humanities lecture is the final session of the humanities revitalization project, forming a chiastic structure with the philosophy humanities lecture that began in March.
While the March humanities lecture focused on Western philosophers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, this time it will proceed with Eastern philosophy featuring Toegye Yi Hwang and Yulgok Yi I.
Toegye and Yulgok, great philosophers and thinkers of the mid-Joseon period, are representatives of the Yeongnam and Giho schools respectively. This lecture was prepared to inform that Korea historically had excellent philosophers whose academic depth and insight are on par with Western philosophy.
In particular, the difference between the essence of things as seen by the two sages?Li (理), the principle, and Qi (氣), the vessel containing that essence?whether they originate from one or are separate, is expected to stimulate intellectual curiosity among citizens.
Additionally, this lecture will be held at the Modum Hall of Uijeongbu Culture Station Eum, which opened in September. Just as humanities is the study of understanding people, the motto of "Eum" is "connecting people with people," making it a fitting venue to conclude the humanities lecture series.
Director Yoo Sang-jin said, "The humanities journey for citizens is nearing its end, and we will conclude with a meaningful lecture at a significant place," adding, "Through humanities, we aim to enhance the humanistic culture of Uijeongbu citizens and make the Lifelong Learning Center a beloved institution."
Applications for this education have been available since the 1st on the Uijeongbu Lifelong Learning Center website, and inquiries can be made to the Learning Welfare Team.
