On the 4th, Pohang City successfully held an overseas export consultation meeting by inviting overseas buyers from the Middle East and North America to achieve 30 billion KRW in agricultural and food exports by 2030.
The consultation meeting, held at the Heunghae Agricultural Education and Welfare Center, was designed to expand Pohang's agri-food industry globally and provide practical benefits to local farmers. It brought together overseas buyers from three countries?the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)?and 14 companies specializing in fresh agricultural products and processed agricultural and marine specialties.
This event served as an opportunity to discuss product development strategies tailored to local markets, explore new market opportunities, and promote joint local marketing between buyers and local processing companies, thereby fostering cooperation to expand fresh produce exports in 2025.
Additionally, the city signed export contracts for fresh produce such as strawberries, grapes, cabbage, spinach, chives, and rice, as well as agricultural and marine specialties including red pepper powder, distilled soju, apple juice, sweet potato bread, frozen mulhoe, and fermented Gwamegi. Customized export consultations were also conducted for each company.
Thanks to such proactive overseas marketing efforts, Pohang-style K-Food is captivating global palates. Rice noodles produced in Pohang are gaining sensational popularity in Sri Lanka and the United States, while traditional Korean sweets, soy sauce, summer radish, fermented mulhoe, and Gwamegi are attracting consumers in the United States and Canada. Strawberries, spinach, Bangpung, and watermelon are also winning over local tastes in Hong Kong.
David Jang, CEO of Young Trading LLC based in Dubai and one of the key buyers, said, "Through export consultations with Pohang companies, I was able to experience a variety of items from Pohang, such as grapes and strawberries, which I have always been interested in. I plan to import Pohang’s excellent products and expand sales in local markets."
Jung Kyungwon, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "This export consultation meeting will enhance the competitiveness of local agri-food products and serve as an important bridgehead for local farmers and companies to enter overseas markets. We will continue our support and efforts to achieve our agri-food export goals."
Last year, Pohang exported approximately 8.1 billion won worth of local agricultural specialties, including 18 items such as tomatoes, strawberries, cabbage, radish, and grapes, to 20 countries worldwide. This year, the city aims to reach 9 billion won in exports.
