The road improvement construction for Phase 1-2 (Inha-ro to Juan Industrial Complex Overpass) of the Incheon-daero (formerly Gyeongin Expressway) generalization project will officially begin at the end of this month.
According to Incheon City on the 4th, the private construction company selected last July plans to sequentially dismantle the median divider, lanes, retaining walls, and soundproof walls along the 3 km Phase 1-2 section by 2027.
Due to this construction, the existing 6-lane (3 lanes each way) section will be reduced to a minimum of 2 lanes each way, and the traffic speed limit will be lowered from 70 km/h to 50 km/h from the Incheon starting point to the Gajwa section.
The Incheon-daero generalization project involves demolishing retaining walls and soundproof walls along the 10.45 km section from the Incheon starting point to Seoincheon IC of the former Gyeongin Expressway, which has divided downtown Incheon for over 50 years, and creating parks, green spaces, and leisure areas in the center of the road. For urban regeneration, the city converted this section from an expressway to a general road in 2019 and named it 'Incheon-daero.'
The city began construction in July on Phase 1-1 (1.8 km from the Incheon starting point to the back gate of Inha University), dismantling retaining walls and soundproof walls on both sides.
Phase 2 (Juan Industrial Complex to Seoincheon IC), covering 5.65 km, is scheduled for completion by 2030. Considering that the aboveground road in Phase 2 will be reduced from 6 lanes to 4 lanes, a 4-lane underground road will be constructed along the 4.5 km section from Gongdan Overpass to Seoincheon IC to alleviate congestion.
An official from Incheon City said, "Traffic congestion during rush hours is expected due to lane reductions during construction, so please use detour routes such as the Metropolitan Area 2nd Ring Expressway, the 2nd Gyeongin Expressway, and Jungbong-daero."
