Village Association Operating Campsite Illegally Uses Military Base Electricity
Charges Campers 10,000 Won Separately for Electricity Fee
A famous camping site was caught secretly stealing electricity from a nearby military base. It is known that the camping site charged campers separately for electricity fees.
MBC reported on the 2nd that a camping site operated in a village in Gangwon-do was caught secretly drawing electricity from a nearby military base.
The camping site attracts many vacationers visiting a nearby beach in the summer, and can accommodate up to 150 vehicles. However, the amount paid for electricity by the camping site in the past month was only 250,000 won. This amount is much lower compared to other camping sites of similar size.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that lighting facilities used by the military base for coastal surveillance were installed along the beach near the camping site, and the village association operating the camping site had connected wires to the distribution box of these facilities to steal electricity.
The camping site had been charging campers 10,000 won per day for electricity.
After learning of this, the military base reported the village chief to the police. The police, having received the complaint, plan to summon village officials for questioning soon and investigate the exact amount of damages.
A legal expert told MBC, "Electricity is considered property, and depending on the circumstances of the crime and the duration of use, offenders may face fines up to 10 million won or imprisonment for up to six years."
Meanwhile, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) revealed that over the past five years, local governments and others have caused nearly 3 billion won in damages due to unauthorized electricity use.
According to KEPCO’s released data on "Unauthorized Electricity Use in the Past 5 Years," there were a total of 1,599 cases of unauthorized electricity use during this period. The resulting damages were calculated at 2.944 billion won.
