HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has become the first in Korea to obtain Basic Approval (AIP) from both domestic and international classification societies for export-type submarine design safety standards, leading the global export of K-submarines.
On the 2nd, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries received Basic Approval (AIP) based on the Naval Submarine Rule from DNV (Norwegian classification society) for its 2300-ton export-type submarine, and also obtained Basic Approval (AIP) in the submarine safety field based on the International Naval Safety Association (INSA) from KR (Korean Register).
Due to the nature of underwater operations, "safety" is the most critical element in submarine construction. In January this year, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed separate agreements with DNV and KR to introduce Korea's first 'Submarine Safety Certification System' that meets safety standards.
Basic Approval (AIP) is a procedure that verifies the stability and performance validity of a design. With this certification, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been recognized for meeting international safety standards for the HDS-2300 submarine.
The export-type submarine 'HDS-2300', which obtained Basic Approval (AIP) this time, is a model developed independently by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with specifications including a surfaced displacement of 2300 tons, length of 73.0 meters, beam of 8.5 meters, and a maximum surfaced speed of 20 knots (approximately 37 km/h).
Jin Won-ho, Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Special Ship Business, said, "We are pleased to have obtained Basic Approval (AIP) from both domestic and international classification societies by applying Korea's first international submarine safety standards," adding, "Based on a reliable export-type submarine model, we will strengthen our position not only in surface ships but also in the overseas submarine market."
