Providing smoking cessation support services such as counseling, cessation aids, and behavioral therapy education
High success rate and satisfaction among participants in the 'Smoking Cessation Clinic'
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it is implementing a ‘Visiting Smoking Cessation Clinic’ to create a smoke-free environment, reduce harm caused by smoking, and ensure the healthy lives of residents.
According to the 2023 Community Health Survey by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, Geumcheon-gu has a high smoking rate of 18.9% among Seoul’s districts.
The district operates the ‘Visiting Smoking Cessation Clinic’ targeting schools, organizations, and workplaces within Geumcheon-gu. For residents who find it difficult to make time, smoking cessation counselors visit in person more than four times to provide counseling and systematically manage participants.
Applicants receive one-on-one personalized smoking cessation counseling, smoking cessation aids, and behavioral therapy education for six months. Those who succeed in quitting smoking for six months are supported to maintain cessation by receiving congratulatory gifts.
Recently, at Lotte Innovate, which participated in the ‘Visiting Smoking Cessation Clinic,’ the smoking cessation success rate among those determined to quit was 71.4%. The clinic’s systematic management and collaboration with the company’s health management office provided necessary information and services, resulting in a high success rate.
Schools, organizations, and workplaces wishing to participate in the ‘Visiting Smoking Cessation Clinic’ can apply to the Geumcheon-gu Public Health Center by recruiting five or more individuals determined to quit smoking.
Participants who succeeded in quitting smoking said, “Thanks to the help of Geumcheon-gu’s ‘Smoking Cessation Clinic,’ I feel my body and mind becoming healthier,” and added, “I hope to introduce it to smoking acquaintances around me so that a collective smoke-free atmosphere can be created.”
The district is expanding and maintaining designated non-smoking areas, conducting inspections of non-smoking zones, and educating illegal tobacco sales shops targeting youth to lower the smoking rate and create a healthy community. Tailored smoking prevention education is also provided for preschool children, elementary, middle, and high school students, and adults.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I am pleased that many residents have succeeded in quitting smoking through Geumcheon-gu’s smoking cessation support services,” and added, “We will continue to provide various smoking cessation support services for those determined to quit and do our best to spread a smoking cessation culture.”
