Yoon Vetoes Special Prosecutor for Kim Geon-hee and Chae Sang-byeong... Opposition "Re-vote in National Assembly on 4th"

The National Assembly will hold a re-vote on the bills concerning First Lady Kim Geon-hee and Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong on the 4th.

The opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, plan to convene a plenary session on the afternoon of the 4th to conduct a re-vote on the Special Prosecutor Act for the First Lady, the Special Prosecutor Act for Marine Corps personnel, and the Local Currency Act. Earlier, President Yoon Seok-yeol exercised his veto power on the related bills on the 2nd.

Previously, Speaker Woo Won-shik also suggested the possibility of putting the Public Official Election Act to a re-vote before the 10-day statute of limitations, making the convening of the plenary session this week highly likely.

However, even if a re-vote is held, if the bills do not receive the required two-thirds majority of 200 votes, they will be discarded. With the opposition holding 192 seats, if there are 8 or more defections from the People Power Party, the bills could pass, but the likelihood of this happening is low.

Choo Kyung-ho, floor leader of the People Power Party, requested his party members to "remain on standby within the National Assembly premises from the morning of the 4th until the situation concludes, and to attend the members' meeting and the plenary session without exception."

In response, the Democratic Party is increasing pressure on the government and ruling party to accept the Special Prosecutor Act.

Han Min-soo, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, stated in a briefing, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s disregard for the rule of law related to First Lady Kim Geon-hee is endless," criticizing, "The imperial-style investigation into the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation allegations, repeated vetoes of the Special Prosecutor Act for First Lady Kim Geon-hee, and ultimately the dismissal of charges regarding the luxury bag bribery allegations."
