Jang Kyungmi Appointed as Vice President of Korea Intelligent Information Institute... "Leading the Realization of an AI Powerhouse"

The National Information Society Agency (President Hwang Jongseong) announced that the new Vice President, Jang Kyungmi, took office on the 2nd. Vice President Jang Kyungmi is expected to lead the national digital transformation and the realization of a strong AI nation, based on 35 years of public service experience.


Jang Kyungmi began her public service career in 1989 at the Government Electronic Computing Center, which was responsible for administrative informatization policy projects, and has held key positions at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Information Resources Service.


In particular, she played a pivotal role in numerous national projects, including the introduction of the administrative Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system, the establishment of the Government Public Key Infrastructure (GPKI) for electronic signature authentication, the development of core e-government infrastructure, and the formulation of comprehensive plans to promote the use of public data.

Vice President Jang served as Director of Information Resources Management at the Government Integrated Data Center in 2014, Director of the Performance Management Promotion Team at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2017, Director of Public AI Policy at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2020, and Director of Digital Government Planning at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2021. She successfully led national informatization policy as Director of the Daegu Center of the National Information Resources Service until September 2024.


In her inaugural address, Vice President Jang Kyungmi stated, "As we enter the third year of promoting the Digital Platform Government, we will establish a collaborative system among stakeholders to ensure seamless project implementation and apply new technologies such as AI to deliver tangible results for the public." She emphasized, "Beyond becoming a digital powerhouse, we will focus the agency's capabilities on AI policy planning and development, and strive to secure budgets related to AI to realize a leading AI nation."


Vice President Jang also said, "NIA will take the lead in establishing the global digital order and strengthen inclusive digital policies so that all citizens can enjoy digital technology as a basic right." She added, "In response to public institution efficiency policies, we will enhance the efficiency of organizational management and focus on internalizing the agency's capabilities to maintain our status as the world's top specialized institution."


Meanwhile, Vice President Jang Kyungmi immediately received business reports from each department after taking office and plans to set strategic goals and develop concrete implementation plans to establish NIA as a global leader in AI and digital innovation. Her term will last for two years, until October 1, 2026.
