"We Share Our Family's Miracle With You"
Navy Education Command Captain Jang Yunji Donates 25cm of Hair Grown Over 3 Years
The story of a Navy family who donated carefully grown hair and funds to help children with cancer is touching many hearts.
The main characters are Captain Jang Yunji (25 years old) of the Naval Education and Training Command's Information and Communications School, Master Sergeant Jang Hyunyoung (48 years old) of the 2nd Fleet Command's Command Communication Battalion, and Sergeant Jang Minwoo (23 years old) of the Jeongjo Daewangham family.
Captain Jang Yunji and Sergeant Jang Minwoo dreamed of becoming admirable Navy officers while watching their father, Master Sergeant Jang Hyunyoung, during their childhood. After learning about the "Cheonanham Attack Incident," the siblings pledged not just to become admirable Navy officers, but to become Navy officers who would risk their lives to protect their country. In 2021, Yunji and Minwoo were commissioned as a Navy officer and a non-commissioned officer respectively, and now the family serves together to protect the seas of Korea.
On September 30th, Captain Jang donated 25 cm of hair, which she had grown for three years, to the Eomeona Movement Headquarters (the Hair Donation Movement Headquarters for Children with Cancer). Captain Jang decided to donate her hair after watching her mother, who survived cancer. When her mother, who had to wear a wig due to chemotherapy, smiled and said, "I've always insisted on short hair, but don't I look good with long straight hair (wig) too?" it became the moment that inspired Captain Jang to donate.
When Captain Jang expressed her intention to donate her hair, the family decided to commemorate Master Sergeant Jang's 30th anniversary of service, the siblings' promotions to captain and sergeant, and their mother's successful cancer treatment and surgery by also donating funds to help children with cancer and their families.
The donation of 500,000 won and Captain Jang's hair were delivered to the Eomeona Movement Headquarters on the 30th, bringing great joy and hope to children suffering from chemotherapy.
Captain Jang said, "My mother's smile that day was so beautiful that I wanted to bring the same beautiful smiles to the faces of other patients, which is why I decided to participate in this donation. I am honored that our whole family could share warm love together and show the Navy standing alongside the people."
