Hapcheon County in Gyeongnam plans to widely promote the taste and quality of Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo through the 2nd Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo Festival under the slogan "Oboiso, Jeulgyeoboiso, Meogeoboiso, Saboiso" (Come, Enjoy, Taste, Buy).
The pride of Hapcheon, Hwangto Hanwoo, insists on only 1st grade Hanwoo and is known as the "Premium Super Hanwoo," "No.1 for Hanwoo Breeding," and "Hwangto Hanwoo." Following last year's rave reviews, the 2nd Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo Festival will be held again this year from the 11th to the 13th at the lawn plaza of the Hapcheon County Sports Park.
This festival is designed to widely promote Hwangto Hanwoo, Hapcheon's signature local specialty, and to provide visitors with the opportunity to experience Hapcheon's unique nature and traditions.
At last year's festival, visitors were deeply impressed by the excellent taste and price of Hwangto Hanwoo, which was offered at up to 50% discount and grilled directly at the outdoor barbecue zone, as well as by the beautiful scenery of Hapcheon. The 2nd Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo Festival, to be held this year, is drawing much anticipation with an even more diverse program and richer flavors.
Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo is a nationally recognized brand managed by Hapcheon County and the Hapcheon Livestock Cooperative since 1998. Since 2005, the beef traceability system has been introduced, achieving early brand establishment. Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo refers only to cattle that have been fed Hwangto-based feed for over 16 months through a systematic feeding program. As of 2024, there are 503 Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo farms raising 24,119 head of cattle.
Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo is premium beef raised in a clean environment, fed with feed containing enzyme- and mineral-rich Hwangto. The Hapcheon Livestock Cooperative operates two feed factories?one for compound feed and one for fiber feed?supplying HACCP-certified feed with no antibiotics or synthetic antimicrobials.
Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo, raised on Hwangto, is evaluated to have higher zinc (Zn) content in intramuscular fat than regular Hanwoo, resulting in tender texture and outstanding flavor, as well as excellent juiciness and water retention. As of 2023, the average carcass weight of the Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo brand is 492kg, and the 1++ grade rate is 51.3%, the highest among all steer brands nationwide.
Hapcheon is known as the "No.1 for Hanwoo Breeding," conducting breeding and consulting projects for over 30,000 Hanwoo annually. Thanks to these breeding efforts, Hapcheon has become the region that ships the largest number of super-sized Hanwoo, with live weights exceeding 1.2 tons.
Hapcheon County invests 4.3 billion KRW annually in projects such as the Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo premiumization project, livestock brand promotion, and Hanwoo breeding. The Hapcheon Livestock Cooperative operates a pedigree support center for 700 head, conducting over 500 embryo transplants annually, and recently plans to establish a genetic resource transplant center by discovering super Hanwoo donors and superior donor cows. Starting next year, 5,500 embryos will be produced and supplied first to local farms.
Starting with the opening ceremony at 4:30 PM on the 11th, a variety of experiences and attractions, a trot concert, and Hwangto Hanwoo discount events will be held, and visitors can enjoy Hwangto Hanwoo charcoal barbecue grilled on-site.
On the second day, the Hapcheon Hwangto Hanwoo Arts Festival will feature performances by the Hapcheon County Choir, Zomba Dance, trot singer Park Gwanghyun, and saxophonist Shin Yusik.
