During a fire safety training exercise on Ulleungdo, North Gyeongsang Province, a male student, identified as A (13), fell from a height of 9 meters.
According to the Ulleung Fire Department and eyewitnesses on October 1, the accident occurred at around 2 p.m. on September 30 during a joint fire drill for staff and students at Ulleung Middle School, the island’s only secondary educational institution.
As a result of the accident, student A sustained injuries to his back and toes and was transported by the 119 emergency team to a nearby hospital. At around 8:18 p.m., he was airlifted by a North Gyeongsang Fire Department helicopter to a general hospital on the mainland for further treatment. Fortunately, his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Witnesses to the accident reported, "While A was participating in a descent drill using a fire escape device, the rope came loose and he fell from the third floor to the ground."
The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident by questioning fire officials, school staff, and others involved in the training.
