The progressive-leaning major American newspaper, The New York Times (NYT), officially endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris on the 30th (local time). In line with its progressive stance, the NYT has historically supported Democratic candidates in presidential elections.
In an editorial board statement, the NYT expressed support for Harris, stating, "Even if voters have political disagreements with her, Harris is the only patriotic choice for president." The NYT acknowledged that Harris is not a perfect candidate but described her as "more than just a necessary alternative."
Regarding the Republican presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, the NYT criticized him, saying, "It is hard to imagine a candidate less qualified to be President of the United States." They added, "He has proven himself morally unfit for the presidency, a role that requires prioritizing the national interest over personal gain." In particular, they emphasized, "If American voters do not oppose him, President Trump will gain power that will cause severe and lasting harm to our democracy."
