Domestic AI semiconductor companies can now easily verify the reliability of designed chips by utilizing shared verification equipment.
On the 30th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it held the opening ceremony of the 'System Semiconductor Development Support Center' at the Global Convergence Center in the 2nd Pangyo Technovalley, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
The opening ceremony was attended by Lee Seung-ryeol, Director of Industrial Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, representatives from fabless semiconductor companies such as Mobilint, NovaChips, and Soteria, as well as about 100 public and private semiconductor industry officials including Shin Sang-jin, Mayor of Seongnam, Shin Hee-dong, President of the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Jeon Yoon-jong, President of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, Kim Jeong-hoe, Vice Chairman of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, and Lee Jang-gyu, Vice Chairman of the Korea Fabless Industry Association.
With the opening of this Development Support Center, together with the 'System Semiconductor Design Support Center' in 2nd Pangyo, which has been supporting fabless companies' design programs (EDA tools) and prototype production since 2020, a full-cycle AI semiconductor development support infrastructure (design-prototype-verification-commercialization) has been established.
Fabless companies will be able to jointly utilize expensive emulators (equipment that verifies chip performance at the system stage before AI semiconductor chip production) and measurement devices to be installed within the center. The Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, Korea Fabless Industry Association, and Seongnam Industry Promotion Agency will support fabless companies' verification processes and provide training to cultivate verification personnel.
The government and Seongnam City expect that with Pangyo, where about 40% of domestic fabless companies are concentrated, establishing infrastructure not only with the System Semiconductor Design Support Center but also with this new Development Support Center, it will become a core hub for fabless companies.
Director Lee Seung-ryeol stated, "Through the system semiconductor industry promotion plan, including AI, to be announced within this year, we will continue to invest and support so that we can become a leading country in the system semiconductor field, including AI semiconductors."
