On the 29th, Yonhap News reported that Kang Mo (62), the father of a woman in her 20s who was the victim of the Maserati drunk driving hit-and-run fatal accident in Gwangju, bid farewell to his daughter’s final journey. The deceased, who was born and raised in Gwangju, had been working for the past two years at a local logistics center, packing goods before delivery. Although the family’s financial situation was not difficult, she was a strong-willed daughter who headed to work to achieve her long-planned 'independent living' since she was just over twenty years old.
Despite not earning much, she gave her parents 300,000 won every month as allowance, and for her wedding fund, Kang said he saved the money his daughter sent him. Kang tearfully said, "Whenever I see the money envelopes filled with crumpled cash, I am reminded of my daughter who dreamed of a happy married life," adding, "How could parents ever recklessly spend money that belongs to their precious daughter?"
Because her working hours were from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. the next day, her daily routine was reversed, but she was known to always accomplish what she set her mind to. In the early morning of the 24th, the day of the accident, after faithfully completing her assigned packing work, she was riding on the back of a motorcycle heading home when she was struck and killed by a drunk-driving Maserati vehicle.
Kang choked up, saying, "She was a devoted daughter who wanted to hold a belated 60th birthday party and celebration for me, which was just two weeks away, but why did she leave this world ahead of her parents in such a hurry..." He continued, "The driver who not only drove under the influence but also fled the scene must be severely punished," emphasizing, "We hope our daughter is the last victim of a drunk driving fatal accident."
The offending driver fled to Seoul and other areas immediately after the accident but was caught by the police 67 hours later on the 26th. It is reported that the driver claimed to be unemployed during the police investigation but remained silent when asked about what he had been doing during his several months’ stay in Thailand. Because of this, some have raised suspicions that he might be involved with a voice phishing organization. Furthermore, questions about his whereabouts have increased as it was revealed that he abandoned the Maserati vehicle and fled immediately after the accident, and that his registered address on the resident registration was falsely registered at an administrative welfare center in Buk-gu, Gwangju.
