Despite the dark tunnel of the economic recession, the warmth of the 100 Won Association continued unwaveringly this year as well.
The 100 Won Association (President Kim Hee-man) delivered hope scholarships totaling 5.7 million won to 24 middle, high school, and university students at 11 a.m. on the 29th in the meeting room of the Singa-dong Administrative Welfare Center in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
University student Lee Jin (Seoyoung University, 4th year) and eight others received scholarships of 300,000 won each, while 15 middle and high school students including Jung Da-in (Munjeong Girls' High School, 3rd year) were awarded 200,000 won each.
Ms. Lee Jin said, "I was truly surprised to learn that this scholarship fund has been carefully collected for 26 years by people from all walks of life across the country, each contributing 100 won a day," adding, "I will take this as a good opportunity to enter society and practice sharing with neighbors who are less fortunate than myself."
Kim Hee-man, president of the 100 Won Association, said, "Our members are people who practice continuous sharing, not one-time acts, which makes me bow my head in respect," and added, "I am grateful for the unwavering trust and support over the past 26 years."
The scholarship presentation also marked the 26th anniversary of the 100 Won Association’s founding. This year’s scholarship distribution was the 25th, with a total of 195.5 million won awarded to 1,149 recipients so far, including 266 university students and 883 middle and high school students. Scholarship recipients are selected based on recommendations from the five district offices of Gwangju Metropolitan City.
President Kim also expressed difficulties in raising scholarship funds. He said, "Although about 700 members nationwide from Gangwon-do, the metropolitan area, Yeongnam region, and other areas pay 100 won daily as membership fees, some members have become unreachable due to the implementation of the new address system and changes in mobile phones, limiting our ability to deliver new information," and pledged, "Going forward, we will devote efforts to strengthening online platforms to revitalize the second 100 Won Association."
