Expansion of Supplies and Environmental Improvement Support for Private Senior Centers
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it is carrying out expansion and renovation projects for 13 aging senior centers that have been in use for over 30 years to provide elderly residents with safe and convenient spaces for leisure. Among them, Wolseong Senior Center has completed its first renovation and will resume operations starting from the 27th.
Wolseong Senior Center, located within Doldari Children's Park in Sinwol 1-dong, is a 34-year-old two-story masonry building. Due to its cramped space and severe aging, structural improvements were urgently needed. The district demolished the existing building and carried out expansion and renovation work to construct a three-story building with a total floor area of 137.79㎡.
An elevator was installed inside the senior center, and anti-slip safety handrails were added to prevent fall accidents, ensuring that elderly residents with mobility difficulties can use the facility safely and conveniently.
The district plans to hold an opening ceremony on the morning of the 27th to celebrate the renovation of Wolseong Senior Center with about 50 local elderly residents and key guests.
In addition, the district is promoting customized improvement projects for each senior center by reviewing the surrounding environment rather than applying uniform structural improvements. Dangok, Gyeongbok, Handu, Yangmok, Singok, and Geumsil Senior Centers aim to complete construction by next year, while Namal, Sindae, Jungang, Jayang, Cheongsol, and Sinyang Senior Centers plan to start expansion and renovation projects from next year.
Since this year, the district has expanded support for supplies and environmental improvements not only for public senior centers but also for private senior centers, which generally have poorer environmental management. By the first half of this year, necessary items such as dish dryers, automatic blood pressure monitors, and stand air conditioners were provided to 20 public senior centers and 82 private senior centers, and aging boiler facilities were replaced.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “Through facility improvements and expanded support for senior centers, we are implementing various projects to ensure that elderly residents can enjoy a safer and happier later life. We will strive to make senior centers not just simple resting places but spaces where they can enjoy comfortable leisure activities such as health and digital education.”
