Ulsan City Partners with Hyundai Motor to Improve Traffic System on Asan-ro

Business Agreement Signed for Asan-ro Traffic System Improvement on the 26th

Traffic Flow Improvement in Yeomposan Tunnel Section After Toll Removal

Ulsan City and Hyundai Motor Company are joining hands to improve the traffic system on Asan-ro.

On the morning of the 26th at 10 a.m., Ulsan City will sign a business agreement in the mayor's office on the 7th floor of City Hall to resolve traffic congestion at the Yeomposan Tunnel.

Attending the signing ceremony will be Ulsan Mayor Kim Dukyum, Hyundai Motor Company CEO Lee Dongseok, and union branch chief Moon Yongmun.

According to Ulsan City, the labor and management of Hyundai Motor Company have agreed to use the factory site for the greater good to resolve the local issue of traffic congestion at Yeomposan Tunnel, and will sign the agreement on this day.

Under the agreement, Ulsan City will proceed with construction to improve the traffic system within the Asan-ro site. Hyundai Motor Company will support the smooth planning and construction of the traffic system improvement project on its factory premises.

The Yeomposan Tunnel, as part of Mayor Kim Dukyum's pledge for the 8th popularly elected administration, implemented free tolls from January 1 last year to reduce the economic burden on residents and businesses in Dong-gu and to guarantee faster mobility. Analysis of traffic volume over the past year since the toll exemption shows that it has contributed to easing the economic burden on local residents and businesses.

However, the toll exemption also led to a 17.8% increase in traffic volume compared to 2022, resulting in congestion during commuting hours.

In response, Ulsan City conducted a comprehensive review to develop improvement measures to resolve the traffic congestion at Yeomposan Tunnel.

The review concluded that improving the Asan-ro traffic system would be both economical and effective. However, creating an access road within the Hyundai Motor Company factory site raised issues such as additional costs for installing security facilities and the need to redesign vehicle movement routes within the factory area.

To resolve these issues, Ulsan City held several consultations with Hyundai Motor Company and obtained their agreement, in the spirit of the greater good, to contribute to alleviating citizens' traffic inconveniences.

Mayor Kim Dukyum of Ulsan stated, "Through this project, we expect that the traffic congestion at Yeomposan Tunnel will be improved and citizens' inconveniences will be somewhat alleviated. Even after the project is completed, we will continue to monitor and work to ensure that the congestion issue at Yeomposan Tunnel is fully resolved."

Meanwhile, the Asan-ro traffic system improvement project involves closing the left-turn signal at the 'Haeanmun Intersection' for entry to Hyundai Motor Company and newly establishing an intersection near the new electric vehicle plant site to allow left turns into Hyundai Motor Company.

In addition, the project will address the inconvenience where, until now, drivers who entered Asan-ro incorrectly in either direction had to travel the entire length of the road due to the lack of a turnaround.

Ulsan City expects that once this project is completed, the proportion of straight signals at the Haeanmun Intersection, which has been the main cause of traffic congestion at Yeomposan Tunnel, will increase, thereby improving congestion during commuting hours.
