The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI, President Yang Sung-kwang) announced on the 26th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the MAX-IV Laboratory at Lund University in Sweden and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Sweden to promote the successful establishment of a multipurpose synchrotron radiation accelerator and the global utilization of synchrotron radiation accelerators.

KBSI Signs MOU for Ochang Synchrotron Radiation Accelerator Cooperation with Sweden

This MOU aims to advance the field of synchrotron radiation accelerators and strengthen scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries through international joint research. The MOU signing ceremony was attended by KBSI President Yang Sung-kwang, Ambassador Lee Hyung-jong of the Republic of Korea to Sweden, Maria Nilsson, State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research, and Olof Karis, Director of MAX-IV at Lund University, Sweden, where they discussed various ways Korea and Sweden can collaborate in the field of synchrotron radiation accelerators.

The MOU includes cooperation such as “joint research promotion for the construction and utilization of synchrotron radiation accelerators” to accelerate the successful establishment and utilization of the 4th generation multipurpose synchrotron radiation accelerator being built in Ochang, Chungbuk; “mutual personnel exchange to strengthen the capabilities of synchrotron radiation accelerator researchers”; and “joint hosting of workshops and conferences to exchange technologies and information on the construction and utilization of synchrotron radiation accelerators.” KBSI expects that this will lay the foundation for the successful establishment of the multipurpose synchrotron radiation accelerator and enable researchers from both countries to conduct innovative collaborative research.

Yang Sung-kwang, President of KBSI, stated, “Through this agreement, Korea and Sweden will expand the boundaries of accelerator science and basic science research and work together to seek solutions for the sustainable development of the world.”
