France Records Over 240,000 Abortions Last Year, Up 8,600 Cases from Previous Year

It was revealed that a total of over 240,000 abortions were performed in France last year. France is the first country in the world to explicitly enshrine the 'freedom to have an abortion' in its constitution this year.

According to data released on the 25th (local time) by the French Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) in the social and health sectors, a total of 243,623 abortions were performed in France last year. This is 8,655 more than in 2022 (234,968 cases).

The number of abortions in France slightly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2020 (216,674 cases) and 2021 (217,521 cases), but has been increasing again since 2022.

When converted to the abortion rate per 1,000 women aged 15 to 49, the rate last year was 16.8, higher than 16.2 in 2022.

The number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 20 to 24 last year was 28.2, an increase of 1.0 compared to the previous year. For those aged 25 to 29, it was 29.9, up 1.2 from a year earlier. For women aged 30 to 34, it was recorded at 25.8 per 1,000.

Meanwhile, as movements to restrict abortion rights and women's rights have been observed around the world, the French government explicitly enshrined the freedom to have an abortion in the constitution for the first time worldwide in March this year.
