Agreement at Ruling and Opposition Leaders' Meeting... Launch After Negotiations
Final Launch Timing Discussed Immediately After the Plenary Session on the 26th
The 'Common Livelihood Pledge Promotion Council' agreed upon by the ruling and opposition party leaders is set to launch soon. The leadership of both parties has finalized negotiations for the council's launch and is currently coordinating the timing. Since this council is a consultative body where both parties jointly develop livelihood pledges, there is an expectation that it will open a new chapter for cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties.
A key official from the People Power Party said in a phone call on the 25th, "Negotiations for the Common Livelihood Pledge Promotion Council have been completed, and it will launch soon." The reason the ruling and opposition parties have not fixed the launch date is because on the 26th, the National Assembly plenary session will hold a re-vote on bills vetoed by the government. Given the anticipated conflict between the parties over the re-vote, launching the council?a symbol of cooperation?at this time could be burdensome. The parties plan to discuss the launch date after the plenary session concludes.
People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung agreed to jointly operate the Common Livelihood Pledge consultative body during a meeting of party leaders on the 1st. Since then, negotiations for the council's launch have taken place between Kim Sang-hoon, the People Power Party's Policy Committee Chair, and Jin Sung-jun, the Democratic Party's Policy Committee Chair. However, the Democratic Party's forceful passage of the Cha Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act and Kim Geon-hee Special Prosecutor Act at the plenary session on the 19th temporarily disrupted negotiations between the two parties. Subsequently, negotiations resumed among the policy committee chairs and leadership, and the ruling and opposition parties reached a final agreement to launch the council.
Although the ruling and opposition parties have experienced conflicts in the 22nd National Assembly due to the legislative dominance of the majority opposition party, they have shown cooperation in parliamentary activities for the people's livelihood, such as agreeing to pass 28 livelihood-related bills on August 28. At the plenary session on the 26th, the ruling and opposition parties are also expected to agree on and pass more than 70 livelihood bills. With negotiations for the council's launch expected to conclude as early as next week, it is interpreted that both parties are continuing their efforts for cooperation amid conflicts.
