Submit at least 5 Poems or Sijo, or 1 Novel via Registered Mail or Email
One Winner Awarded 10 Million KRW, One Runner-up Awarded 5 Million KRW... Award Ceremony in December
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will hold the "5th Yeongdeungpo Literary Award Contest" as part of a project commemorating the poet of the river, Gu Sang (具常).
Poet Gu Sang (具常) lived in Yeongdeungpo for over 30 years and left a significant mark on modern Korean literature through various works centered on the Han River.
Now in its fifth year, the Yeongdeungpo Literary Award aims to encourage literary creative activities among residents and discover talented emerging writers, attracting great interest from many residents every year.
The eligibility criteria include those whose registered residence or birthplace is Yeongdeungpo-gu as of the contest date, or works whose subject matter is "Yeongdeungpo" regardless of the creator’s residence or birthplace.
The contest categories are poetry and novel. For poetry, submissions must include at least five poems, including sijo. For novels, submissions should be approximately 80 pages on 200-character manuscript sheets. Established writers may also participate, but only with unpublished works.
Applicants wishing to enter can submit their works by visiting the Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Culture and Sports Division, sending by registered mail, or via the responsible staff’s email by October 30.
One winner will be selected in each category: the grand prize and the runner-up. The grand prize winner will receive 10 million KRW, and the runner-up will receive 5 million KRW.
The final results will be individually notified by the end of November, and the award ceremony is scheduled to be held at Yeongdeungpo Art Hall in December. For more details, please refer to the Yeongdeungpo-gu Office website’s news section or contact the Culture and Sports Division for guidance.
As part of the Gu Sang (具常) poet commemoration project, the district is promoting various initiatives. Earlier, on May 16, the district designated the 1,553-meter section of Yeouidong-ro from the 63 Building to the southern end of Mapo Bridge as an honorary road to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the poet’s passing and honor his literary achievements. In November, a "Gu Sang Han River Writing Contest" will be held for high school students and the general public, and in December, alongside the literary award ceremony, a "Gu Sang Literary Seminar" highlighting the poet’s literary world will also take place.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Through this literary award contest, I hope to meet excellent writers who will carry on the noble literary legacy and spirit of poet Gu Sang.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to create a genuine ‘cultural city Yeongdeungpo’ where culture and arts flow.”
