Police Officer Harassed Woman on Street
Previously Suspended Due to Attempted Rape of Fellow Officer
Disciplinary Committee to Decide Punishment Level Soon
A police officer working in Jeju Island was arrested on charges of sexually harassing a woman on the street.
On the 25th, the Jeju Police Agency announced, "We have arrested Mr. A, a man in his 30s affiliated with the Seogwipo Police Station, on charges of forcible sexual harassment." Mr. A is accused of touching the thigh and other parts of the body of a woman he did not know, who was sitting near the Jeju City Hall area around 4 a.m. on the 21st. He was intoxicated at the time and was immediately arrested by police officers who responded to a report from the victim’s party. The Jeju Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. A on the 23rd, citing "risk of flight."
This is not Mr. A’s first offense. At the end of April, he was sent to the prosecution on the 13th on charges of attempted rape for trying to sexually assault a fellow police officer at a lodging facility located in Jeju City. Mr. A, who was working at a local police substation, had been suspended from his position due to that incident but committed another sex crime. Initially, he denied the charges during the police investigation, but it is reported that he admitted to the charges during the pre-arrest warrant hearing.
In response, Kim Su-young, Chief of the Jeju Police Agency, stated at a press conference held on the 25th, "We regret that a member of our staff has committed consecutive sex crimes," and added, "We will strengthen sexual crime prevention education to prevent such incidents from recurring." Based on the investigation results, the police plan to hold a disciplinary committee soon to determine the level of disciplinary action against Mr. A.
