Suddenly Entered Brain Death State, Shin Ha-yul Donates Heart, Lungs, Liver, and More
An 11-year-old elementary school student who dreamed of becoming a lawyer gave new life to five people through brain-dead organ donation and passed away.
On the 25th, the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency announced that Shin Ha-yul donated her heart, lungs, liver, and left and right kidneys through brain-dead organ donation at Konyang University Hospital on July 31, saving five lives.
Ha-yul suddenly collapsed on July 25, complaining of stomach pain, and was transported to the hospital, but she did not regain consciousness and entered a brain-dead state. Ha-yul’s mother, unable to believe she had to suddenly say goodbye to her daughter, agreed to the donation with the hope of saving at least part of her daughter’s body. She wished that the recipients of her daughter’s organs would live healthily with good hearts, carrying on her daughter’s legacy.

Born as an only child in Chungju, Chungbuk, Ha-yul was lively and considerate, always enjoying sharing even small things. She had a kind heart, giving her mother, who was starting a pension business, the allowance she had saved since childhood. Ha-yul enjoyed reading books and crafting, and her dream was to become a lawyer when she grew up.
Ha-yul’s mother said, "She was a kind child who would always feed me first before eating herself. I don’t know who received her organs, but I hope they live healthily with a kind heart." She added, "I hope she thinks of me a lot from heaven, and I am so grateful she was born as my daughter," bidding her farewell.
Lee Sam-yeol, director of the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, said, "We thank the donor’s family and the donor who showed warmth in saving others despite the sorrow of losing an 11-year-old child," and added, "We hope the warmth of love spreads through this precious sharing of life."
