OpenAI CEO Altman: "Superintelligence Will Emerge Within Thousands of Days Through Deep Learning"

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, predicted that superintelligence surpassing human intelligence will emerge through deep learning that trains artificial intelligence (AI).

On the 23rd (local time), Altman wrote on his blog, "Superintelligence could appear within thousands of days," adding, "It might take longer, but I am confident that we will get there." He said that through deep learning, humanity can reach the threshold of the next prosperity, stating, "By investing more resources in deep learning, humanity has discovered algorithms capable of learning any data distribution."

Altman said, "AI will provide tools to solve difficult problems and help open new, unexpected paths," adding, "Within the next few decades, we will be able to do things that seemed like magic to the generations of our grandfathers and grandmothers." He said, "By forming personal AI teams composed of virtual experts from various fields, we will be able to create almost anything imaginable together," and he expected AI to be utilized in various fields to make life more convenient and efficient.

Altman predicted, "AI will improve with scale, leading to meaningful improvements in the lives of people worldwide," and "AI models will soon act as autonomous personal assistants performing specific tasks, such as coordinating medical services on behalf of users."

He also emphasized the importance of expanding AI infrastructure. He expressed concern, saying, "To put AI in the hands of as many people as possible, we need to lower computing costs and create abundant computing resources," adding, "If infrastructure is not sufficiently built, AI will become a highly limited resource in a state of conflict, and it will mostly be a tool for the wealthy."

Furthermore, while acknowledging that AI, like other technologies, has drawbacks, he stressed that it is a technology with many advantages. He said, "AI technology will bring significant changes to the labor market in the coming years," but also noted, "People have an instinctive desire to create and help each other, so jobs will not disappear."

Altman emphasized, "Many of the things we do today would have seemed like trivial time-wasting to people hundreds of years ago," adding, "But if we can rapidly move forward a hundred years from today, the prosperity around us will be unimaginably greater."
