Resident Participation Market Opens at Gireum Youth Startup Street (Gireum Station~Mia Elementary)
Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will hold the '2024 Dugeun Dugeun Byeolgil Market' event on the 29th around Samyang-ro in Gireum-dong (the section from Gireum Station to Mia Elementary School).
The 2024 Byeolgil Market event offers a variety of attractions, including the 'Children's Exploration Team' where participants can explore hidden alleys in the street and get closer to the community, the 'Zero Waste Market' themed around the climate crisis, the 'Youth Startup Market' created by young entrepreneurs, the artists' art market exhibition 'One-day Market,' and 'Byeolgil Performances' hosted by local artists and groups. Additionally, the youth space Giri-eum will be open to children, offering a mask-making program where children can become Samyang-ro heroes.
From the opening ceremony at 12:50 PM, various performances such as children's dance groups, magic shows, and line dances by participants of the Gireum 2-dong resident autonomy program will be held on the stage in front of Exit 8 of Gireum Station and in front of Kookmin University Gireum Dormitory.
First launched in 2019, the 'Dugeun Dugeun Byeolgil Market' is Seongbuk-gu's representative local festival that brings together residents, young entrepreneurs, cultural artists, and local activists.
This event, held to inform residents of the efforts and achievements such as the reduction of harmful businesses, the cleanly maintained street environment, and the youth startup stores in the startup street, and to maintain Samyang-ro as a 'street with youth startups and culture,' is a resident-led flea market attracting over 5,000 visitors annually.
Seongbuk-gu has reduced the number of 'Maekyangjip' (bars selling beer and liquor with illegal and inappropriate operations) from 37 to 13 through efforts such as eradicating harmful businesses on Samyang-ro and improving the street environment, revitalizing the Gireum Youth Startup Street.
An official from the district office stated, "We will make every effort to continuously foster the youth startup ecosystem through various achievements such as establishing the youth startup hub space Giri-eum, the opening of seven youth startup stores, operating the youth startup experimental space Gong-eopsa, and the ongoing construction of the tentatively named 'Seongbuk Youth Smart Startup Center.'"
Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, "Through the 2024 Byeolgil Market event, I hope it will bring hope to dreaming youths and become a street where residents of Gireum-dong and Seongbuk-gu want to walk with their families."
