National Gyeongju Cultural Heritage Research Institute Excavation Survey Starting from the 23rd
The National Institute of Cultural Heritage's Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will begin an excavation at Burial Mound No. 5 in the Goryeong Jisandong Tumuli Cluster starting with a traditional ritual on the 23rd. The traditional ritual is a ceremony held to announce the reason before undertaking significant national or social events.
Burial Mound No. 5 is the largest tumulus within the Goryeong Jisandong Tumuli Cluster, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed "Gaya Tumuli Cluster." It has a diameter of 45 meters and a height of 11.9 meters.
In the Joseon Dynasty geographical record, Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (新增東國輿地勝覽), it is recorded as "Geumrim Wangneung (錦林王陵)." Although King Geumrim does not appear in other historical texts, he is presumed to have been a king of Daegaya.
The first excavation was conducted in 1939 by Japanese archaeologists Arimitsu Kyoichi and Saito Tadashi. However, only brief investigation details, some photos of the excavation process, and a few unearthed artifacts remain.
The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will continue the excavation until December 2026. An official stated, "Since this is a re-excavation after 85 years, we will continuously disclose the results."
