Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that the Songpa Geulmaru Library, the representative public library of the district, will hold the ‘Uruguay Day’ event on September 26.
This event is a festival prepared to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Uruguay (October 7) and to allow participants to experience various aspects of Uruguayan culture. The event will be attended by the Ambassador of Uruguay to Korea (Pablo Ernesto Scheiner Corea) and the Consul (Gabriela Silva Canzani).
The theme of the festival is the ‘Uruguay Carnival,’ which has a long tradition and history. The ‘Uruguay Carnival’ is famous as the longest carnival in the world, lasting about 40 days from February to early March, held in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, as well as in various other regions.
The festival will feature diverse Uruguayan cultural experience programs throughout the Geulmaru Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 26th. These include ▲making carnival masks ▲making gaucho belts ▲comparative experience of La Rayuela and hopscotch ▲experiencing traditional Uruguayan food ▲Maria Perez Burger folk painting exhibition ▲Uruguayan picture book exhibition.
In particular, the Ambassador of Uruguay to Korea has prepared a special time to read the Uruguayan picture book ‘El hacedor de p?jaros (The Bird Maker Grandfather)’ to children visiting the library. The ‘Ambassador Reading Picture Books’ session will take place from 2:30 p.m. on the first floor at Saessakmaru, offering a unique enjoyment.
Additionally, special lectures are prepared. From 10 a.m., the class ‘Art Travel with Culture’ will introduce the somewhat unfamiliar history and overall culture of Uruguay through art. From 2 p.m., a lecture titled ‘La Cumparsita: The Dance of Communication’ will be held, showcasing the charm of Uruguayan tango, which is still not well known domestically.
The Uruguay Day festival is open to everyone, and detailed information can be found on the Songpa-gu Integrated Library website or by calling the Songpa Geulmaru Library.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanks to the active cooperation of the Embassy of Uruguay in Korea, we were able to plan a Uruguayan cultural experience event in Songpa-gu,” and added, “I hope many residents participate in this valuable opportunity to experience Uruguayan culture, including carnival, gaucho, and tango.”
