Martyr Yu Gwansun Buried in Itaewon, Memorial Ceremony for Her Martyrdom Held on the 25th Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, is offering flowers at the memorial ceremony for the martyr Yu Gwan-sun held last year. Provided by Yongsan-gu.

To commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Activist Yu Gwan-sun, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will hold the "104th Memorial Ceremony for Activist Yu Gwan-sun" at 2 p.m. on the 25th at the Itaewon Bugundang Historical Park. This memorial ceremony marks the 10th annual event held by Yongsan-gu.


The invited guests for the memorial ceremony include about 100 people such as Yu Gwan-sun’s family members and the commemorative association. The ceremony is also open to the general public, allowing them to watch the performances and participate in the citizen flower offering and incense burning after the performances.


Activist Yu Gwan-sun was from Yongdu-ri, Byeongcheon-myeon, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. She participated in the March 1st Movement in 1919 and was imprisoned. After her release, she returned to Cheonan and led the Aunae Independence March, but was re-imprisoned and passed away on September 28, 1920, at Seodaemun Prison.


To honor the noble spirit of Yu Gwan-sun, who was buried in the Itaewon communal cemetery after her martyrdom, Yongsan-gu installed a small memorial monument at Itaewon Bugundang Historical Park in 2015 and has held the memorial ceremony annually on the martyrdom anniversary.


District Mayor Park Hee-young said, “Thanks to the noble sacrifices of Activist Yu Gwan-sun and countless independence activists, we are able to be where we are today,” and added, “We will never forget Yu Gwan-sun’s cry for freedom and peace.”
