Gyeonggi-do Launches AI Ecosystem Development Including City and Knowledge Belt Projects

Gyeonggi-do Launches AI Ecosystem Development Including City and Knowledge Belt Projects AI Knowledge Industry Belt of Gyeonggi Province

Gyeonggi Province is taking a full-scale step toward building an AI ecosystem by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to create a 'City' and connect knowledge industry belts.

On the 23rd, Gyeonggi Province announced that in the second half of this year, as a key provincial government project, it will promote seven major initiatives: ▲ Establishment of Pangyo AI City ▲ Hosting the Korea AI International Film Festival ▲ 360-degree AI Plus Care ▲ Provision of Gyeonggi AI Agent AI Gyeonggi-in Service ▲ Creation of AI Clusters ▲ Construction of AI Knowledge Industry Belt ▲ AI Innovation Center (4th Industrial Revolution Center).

First, Gyeonggi Province will establish 'Pangyo AI City' in Pangyo Techno Valley as a hub for AI technology development and industrial promotion. Pangyo AI City will be built together with an 'AI Technology Safe Zone' capable of analyzing and utilizing sensitive data such as healthcare data, which is not available in the metropolitan area.

To this end, Gyeonggi Province will provide infrastructure and resources necessary for AI technology development in Pangyo AI City, including GPUs (graphics processing units) and domestically produced AI semiconductors. It will also support fostering AI companies across various industrial sectors by facilitating AI technology verification, AI business model consulting, and creating AI services utilizing public infrastructure within the province.

Additionally, the province will activate the currently operating Gyeonggi AI Campus to cultivate practical AI professionals by linking AI experts and big tech companies.

Gyeonggi Province will also hold the 'Korea AI International Film Festival' to promote creative activities using generative AI. The first festival, scheduled for October 25 at KINTEX in Ilsan, Goyang, will feature screenings and awards for videos produced with generative AI technology, along with a professional forum.

The '360-degree AI Plus Care' project, an AI-based caregiving service for vulnerable groups, will also be implemented. As a measure to minimize care gaps for the elderly and people with developmental disabilities, Gyeonggi Province plans to use AI to check on the well-being and manage the health of vulnerable populations.

Key services include AI-based solitary death prevention and response services for the elderly, AI caregiving services for people with severe developmental disabilities, and AI services for the elderly and chronic patients such as well-being checks, blood pressure monitoring, and stress index assessments.

Gyeonggi Province plans to pilot an AI chatbot in 2025 that provides customized policy information to users, prioritizing high-ranking public notices and welfare policies.

Furthermore, the province will create an 'AI Cluster' by linking ICT (Information and Communication Technology) complexes and universities to provide startup spaces, education, and technology verification for AI startups. It will also attract future industries such as AI-based IT, semiconductors, and mobility to the Northern Suwon Techno Valley and connect them with industrial complexes within the province to build an 'AI Knowledge Industry Belt.' Through the AI Cluster and AI Knowledge Industry Belt, Gyeonggi Province aims to develop itself as the capital of AI knowledge industries in Korea.

Moreover, through an agreement with the World Economic Forum (WEF), Gyeonggi Province plans to establish an 'AI Innovation Center (4th Industrial Revolution Center).' The center aims to optimally respond to the rapidly changing technological revolution era, where opportunities and crises coexist, through public-private cooperation and to prevent polarization. It will focus on supporting startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and mid-sized companies in the province that lack advanced information capabilities and global competitiveness.

Kim Hyun-gon, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "We will actively introduce artificial intelligence technology, the core of the 4th Industrial Revolution era, into provincial administration to improve the quality of life for residents and secure future growth engines for Gyeonggi Province." He added, "We will do our best to ensure that all residents equally benefit from artificial intelligence technology."
