Improvement of Traffic Environment at Guncheong~Jonghap Undongjang Ipgu Intersection
Secured 150 Million Won in Provincial Subsidies... Total 500 Million Won Including County Funds Invested
The section scheduled for implementation in 2025, selected in Gapyeong-gun's '2025 Universal Design for Transportation Vulnerable' contest. Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province (Governor Seo Tae-won) announced on the 20th that it has been finally selected for the '2025 Universal Design Project for the Transportation Vulnerable' organized by Gyeonggi Province, securing 150 million KRW in provincial funds. Gapyeong-gun has been selected for the Universal Design Project for two consecutive years, enabling smooth promotion of urban environment improvement projects.
Universal design refers to creating an urban environment where all people, regardless of age or disability, can live safely and conveniently.
The target area for the 2025 project is the Seokbong-ro section in Gapyeong-eup (from Gapyeong County Office to the entrance intersection of the Comprehensive Sports Complex). This area is densely populated with houses and commercial buildings, and is adjacent to educational, cultural, and sports facilities such as elementary and middle schools, Han Seokbong Gymnasium, and a library, resulting in a high volume of pedestrians. Due to narrow and inconvenient sidewalks, falls among children and the elderly are frequent, and the risk of traffic accidents is high, making pedestrian environment improvement urgent.
The county will promote a pedestrian-friendly street project in the section with a total project cost of 500 million KRW, including 150 million KRW in provincial funds and 350 million KRW in county funds. Through this, the existing sidewalks will be improved, and spaces centered on pedestrian safety and convenience will be created. The county expects significant project effects by providing convenience to elderly and disabled visitors as the host of the 2025-2026 Gyeonggi Province Comprehensive Sports Festival upon project completion.
Governor Seo Tae-won said, "Gapyeong-gun has a higher proportion of elderly population compared to other regions, making the need to guarantee mobility rights for the transportation vulnerable more urgent than any other local government," and added, "Being selected for the Universal Design Project for two consecutive years, we will do our best in urban environment improvement projects for the transportation vulnerable."
Meanwhile, Gapyeong-gun was also selected for the 2024 Gyeonggi Province public project, and is currently promoting nightscape improvement and the creation of pedestrian-only roads and pedestrian rest areas within the Jaraseom entrance section with a total project cost of 950 million KRW (including 150 million KRW in provincial funds).
