Yeosu Coast Guard Utilizes Drones to 'Minimize Security Gaps'

Effectiveness of Enhanced 3D Patrol and Safety Management for Pollution Incidents

Yeosu Maritime Police Station (Chief Choi Kyung-geun) announced, "We are promoting a three-dimensional patrol method using drones, centered on the only multi-purpose pollution control vessel on the west coast, Chemical Pollution Control Ship No. 2."

According to Yeosu Maritime Police, in the Yeosu and Gwangyang port areas where transshipment, refueling operations, and large cargo ship traffic are frequent, the use of drones for marine pollution and red tide monitoring, as well as maritime violation enforcement, has been effective in minimizing blind spots in security and safety.

In particular, during the marine pollution incidents on May 22 and July 3, drones were used to identify the extent of pollution and the direction of pollutant spread in real time, and aerial footage was utilized to monitor additional pollutant spread, efficiently completing pollution control missions.

Furthermore, all crew members of Chemical Pollution Control Ship No. 2 have obtained drone licenses to prepare for the transition to next-generation patrol methods. They are leading the way in future-oriented patrol methods by accumulating safety management data using drones and establishing preventive measures for fishing vessels restricted from night navigation.

A representative from Yeosu Maritime Police stated, "Through drone operations, we will do our best to realize a safe and clean sea by performing multifaceted missions such as pollution control, patrol, security, and crime prevention."
