Quick Response to Accidents with Electric Device Attached Safety Badges
600 People Enrolled in Safety Insurance, Compensation Up to 50 Million Won
Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) announced on the 19th that it will continue to support the subscription to the electric assistive device safety insurance for about 600 registered disabled people this year, which was introduced last year.
This year, a safety badge that can be attached to electric devices was created to enhance convenience by enabling quick contact with the insurance company in case of an accident. This insurance covers up to 50 million KRW per accident (with a 30,000 KRW deductible) for bodily injury and property damage caused during the operation of electric assistive devices.
Disabled residents of Gangnam-gu are automatically enrolled without a separate subscription process, and insurance claims can be made within three years from the date of the accident with no limit on the number of claims. However, compensation for damages to the disabled person themselves is excluded. Insurance claims can be submitted by calling the dedicated consultation center.
In December last year, the district compensated for injuries caused to a pedestrian due to poor driving of a medical scooter, and in February this year, it compensated for damage to a bumper caused by an electric assistive device hitting a parked vehicle. In total, 16 million KRW was paid for 14 accidents annually.
This year, a safety badge for disabled people that can be attached to electric assistive devices was produced and distributed. This badge indicates that the device is insured in case of an accident and includes the insurance company’s contact information for quick communication. It is made with phosphorescent material, making it effective in preventing nighttime accident risks.
District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong stated, “We hope that subscribing to insurance for electric assistive devices will guarantee the mobility rights of disabled people and help reduce the economic burden caused by accidents.” He added, “We will continue to expand policies that provide practical assistance to disabled people and create a city that is safe and convenient for everyone.”
