Assassination Attempt Occurs at Trump-Owned Golf Course
With about 50 days remaining until the U.S. presidential election, another assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has occurred. The suspect arrested on charges of attempting to assassinate former President Trump is reportedly not making any statements related to the charges at this time.
According to reports from U.S. CNN and others on the 15th (local time), Rick Bradshaw, sheriff of Palm Beach County, Florida, where the incident took place, stated, "So far, the suspect has not made any statements related to the assassination attempt," adding, "Further investigation is underway."
The U.S. daily newspaper The New York Times (NYT), citing judicial authorities, reported that the suspect has been identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Lauer from Hawaii. However, the motive for the crime has not yet been confirmed.
The second assassination attempt on former President Trump occurred that afternoon at a golf course in Florida owned by Trump himself. At the time, former President Trump was playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club when U.S. Secret Service (SS) agents responsible for his security spotted the suspect armed with an AK-series rifle.
The agents who spotted the suspect began firing at him. The suspect dropped the rifle and fled in a sport utility vehicle (SUV), but was arrested by police on a highway near Martin County, close to Palm Beach County.
The county sheriff reported that the suspect was in a "relatively calm" state when detained. He also explained that "he did not show much emotion and did not ask 'what is going on,'" and that the suspect was unarmed at the time of arrest.
A significant portion of the highway chosen by the suspect as an escape route was closed, and the SUV he was riding in was safely stopped. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) stated in a press release that they are investigating the incident as an assassination attempt but did not disclose specific identity details such as the suspect’s name.
Meanwhile, former President Trump was shot during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. The bullet caused a wound above his right ear. Although it was confirmed that his life was not in danger at the time, two people at the rally, including the assassination suspect, died and two others were critically injured.
In an email sent to his supporters immediately after the incident, former President Trump stated that he was safe and said, "Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender."
